Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare Engages Community in Meaningful Dialogue

Names of communities served by Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare on signs on posts in a forest.

Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC) recently held a series of 10 well-attended community engagement sessions in Huntsville (4) and Bracebridge (6).  These sessions were invaluable in gathering insights and perspectives that will shape the future of healthcare in the region.

The discussions focused on critical topics such as the distribution of beds and services at the two hospital sites, patient transportation logistics, recruitment and retention of skilled healthcare professionals, and addressing misconceptions about potential hospital closures and privatization risks.  Participants received a detailed overview of the proposed healthcare model and engaged in open, honest conversations about these key issues.

The sessions highlighted the importance of community support services, such as home care and long-term care, which are essential for the success of the new healthcare model. Ensuring patients can access the right level of care, whether in a hospital or at home, remains a priority for MAHC.

In many cases, participants emerged with a better understanding of the proposed model, which ensures that both Huntsville and Bracebridge hospitals will be vibrant, interdependent facilities, each specializing in different areas of care.  This specialization aims to enhance healthcare quality while addressing the diverse needs of the communities and bringing a significant number of new services to the region.

Cheryl Harrison, President and CEO of MAHC, commented:

"It was incredibly heartening to sit down with so many community members and listen to their thoughts and concerns.  These discussions have reinforced our commitment to ensuring that families are integral to the care process and that everyone in our community receives the support they need.  We have learned a lot about the necessity of robust community supports and reliable transportation, as well as the need for flexibility and the capacity to adapt as situations change.  While we have some work to do, we are dedicated to continuing these discussions and working together to build a healthcare system that truly serves everyone in Muskoka."

MAHC is committed to future and ongoing engagement.  We will continue meeting with partner groups and may explore further community engagement sessions focused on specific issues, such as transportation.  This continued dialogue is crucial for refining our redevelopment plans and ensuring they meet the evolving needs of the region.
