Ontario Telemedicine Network
The Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN) is one of the largest telemedicine networks in the world. OTN uses a two-way videoconference technology so that patients can access a specialist anywhere in Ontario, in a timely manner.
A videoconference consultation with a specialist helps patients get the care they need 'in the right place, at the right time and close to home.' These specialists may not be available close to the patients' home. Other benefits include reduced travelling time and costs, and avoiding risky weather conditions.
The specialist gets all of the patients' information and tests ahead of time. A consultation takes place within one of the hospital sites, using the videoconference system. Family members can support the patient by attending the consultation. A Registered Nurse also attends the consultation, for support and clarification.
To see a short video on how the system works, visit the Ontario Telemedicine Network website.
Referrals
Your family physician will refer you to this program if it is appropriate for you. One of our Telemedicine Coordinators will contact you to confirm your appointment.
Throughout your care, patients also benefit from the help of the team of health care professionals at Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare, and access to other inpatient and outpatient services they may need.
The Ontario Telemedicine Network service is available at both hospital sites.
