District Stroke Centre

If you think that you or anyone around you may be experiencing a stroke, it is very important that you call 9-1-1 for an ambulance immediately. Do not drive yourself to the hospital.

The District Stroke Centre at Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare helps to reduce the effects of stroke through treatment that follows province-wide best practices for stroke as part of the Central East Stroke Network. MAHC's Huntsville District Memorial Hospital Site is a designated District Stroke Centre with specially trained staff and physicians educated in stroke best practices. This means as a district centre we are the only hospital in Muskoka that provides the clot-busting drug tPA and the ambulance will go directly to the Emergency Department in Huntsville where you will be treated.  The role of a District Stroke Centre is also to:

  • Provide organized stroke prevention and care to the Muskoka area;
  • Provide leadership and work with stakeholders to achieve integrated stroke care throughout North Simcoe Muskoka; and
  • Work with the Regional Stroke Centre, and other partners, to provide leadership in coordinating stroke care throughout our catchment area and across the entire continuum of care.

Once a stroke patient is stabilized, an interprofessional team will work with patients to help to improve the physical, cognitive, and communicative deficits that are often a result of stroke. Our team works with patients and their families to develop a recovery plan.

Know Your Risk Factors

Warning signs of stroke using the FAST acronym

Each person has their own risk factors for stroke.  By discussing this with your health care providers, you can learn about your risks, and reduce your risk by taking action to manage them.  The Heart & Stroke Foundation provides a FAST way to recognize the signs of stroke.

After Stroke Program

Through a partnership with March of Dimes Canada, inpatients can access After Stroke that connects stroke survivors and their families with personalized stroke recovery and support services, addressing their wide-ranging needs and concerns from the time spent in hospital throughout the transition home and into their communities.  After Stroke volunteers bring emotional support, education, and connections to the community to the stroke survivor and their family while they are in the hospital.

Stroke Education

MAHC offers stroke education to all patients who come to either of our sites with TIA or stroke, provided by District Stroke Nurse Julia Crump.  You can refer yourself by calling 705-789-2311 ext. 2505 or by emailing Julia Crump.  Leave a message with your name and telephone number and the reason for your call, and you will be contacted to set up an appointment date and time.
